How to clean and disinfect shoes is a question that shoemakers and shopkeepers are hearing more and more often. The idea of compromising the hygiene of your home every time you walk through the front door is a common concern.

Disinfecting your shoes: your new good hygiene habit

When you leave the house, you step on all kinds of dirt, and taking off your shoes before entering the house helps to limit the spread of germs and bacteria. But that’s not all: these unwelcome guests will remain welded to your shoes until you decide to evict them permanently. For this reason, cleaning and sanitising shoes is an action that deserves to become one of your good habits.

How to clean shoes and remove dirt

First of all, you need to remove all traces of dirt. Depending on the type of material, consider whether to use a brush or scrub them with a soft, dry paper towel. Remove the laces and, with the paper towel still dry, clean the tongue of the shoe.

Slightly moisten the paper towel with running water: use cold water for canvas or cotton shoes and warm water with some Marseille soap for trainers. Use a neutral cleaner for leather shoes.

At this point, vaporise the shoes thoroughly with an antibacterial spray for shoes created especially for sanitising. It will also eliminate bad smells. Leave it to work for about 15 minutes before wearing them again.

Finally, if you want to see your leather shoes looking as good as new, apply a small amount of shoe polish with a dry paper towel, taking care to choose the right colour for your shoes.
